Lagos Suya Spot Nairobi

Origin Story

I was on vacation and I came to Nairobi. I liked it, the weather especially. I was to stay for 1 week but extended for 2. It was my first time here in 2021. My husband is half Nigerian and half Kenyan.

I went back to Nigeria then the U.S. and I told my hubby how much I like Kenya and would like  to do business but I didn’t know what kind of business at the time. My husband thought I was joking. I came back to Nairobi the second time, then I realized that Nigerian food is not as accessible as I know it; our Nigerian spices not available and even those that you can find at the local grocery store didn’t have the same taste. I was shocked, to see that because I thought being Kenya is Africa, then things that is sold here should be the same as in Nigeria; especially if we can find those spices and food in the USA.   No Nigerian restaurant per say. I didn’t  know much about Nairobi at the time though.  Anyways, with everything I was feeling at the time, with no pepper in Kenya food and I love pepper;  I felt our delicious Nigerian food needs more present here in Nairobi, because we Nigerians travels a lot, and always look for our food.

I decided I would start a Suya Spot as I like Suya. While in the process of getting a place to rent, I met  people who told me to add other food; such jollof rice, Egusi soup etc. . Even though back then, I always knew that I would eventually add more food to our menu as we are known in town, because most Suya Spot I have seen in the USA always eventually incorporate other dishes with the suya.

The name Lagos Suya Spot popped in my head  as a good name because I’m a Lagosian and I’m not in Nigeria, so I thought my people would be able to relate with that name.  We initially started the restaurant in a food court, and now the Lord has grown us to almost 70 seats capacity.

Food is very special to Nigerians and this is seen by the way Nigerians carries their food with them everywhere in the world. I remember back in the days my parent would send me food from Nigeria to  the USA;  and It reached a point they no longer needed to do so as there are many Africa Stores that sell Nigerian food.

Most ingredients we use at Lagos Suya Spot have to be imported as cargo from Nigeria; even as little as the Maggi star, because the ones sold here in Kenya is different taste  from the one we use in Nigeria.  Nigerian food is special and very important to Nigerians so we do not mess with the authenticity of our dishes and I want to make sure that our customers at Lagos Suya Spot get the authentic taste of Nigerian food.

In Nigeria we have a lot of food from different regions. Food from the East, West, South and

Northern parts are different. In Lagos Suya Spot we tend to prepare many delicacies

representing the different parts and cultures of Nigeria. I am a Yoruba woman but Lagos Suya Spot represents dishes from the Delta part, to the West down south and from our Igbo people in the East.  Many delicacies at Lagos Suya Spot will take Nigerians back to fond

memories from home and create vibrant tasty new memories for patrons from all over the world.
